1968-05-29 Lester Piggott SIR IVOR Raymond R Guest Epsom Derby

American-bred Irish-trained SIR IVOR was the 1968 British Horse of the Year. This was run on Wednesday 29th May 1968 and the winner was bred by Mrs Alice Hedley Bell and trained by M.Vincent O’Brien. There were 13 runners and the winning time was 2 mins 38.7 secs. The winner won by 1 1/2 lengths to claim a first prize of £58,525 10s, the equivalent of £1,540,000 today. American businessman and U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, Raymond R. Guest, who named the horse after his British grandfather, Sir Ivor Guest, 1st Baron Wimborne.
