1936-05-27 Charlie Smirke MAHMOUD HH Aga Khan III Epsom Derby led-in

led-in to the Unsaddling Enclosure, MAHMOUD was a short, light-coloured grey, third of only four greys to win the Derby. He was a French-bred, British-trained horse of distinctly Arab appearance. Epsom was exceptionally firm, and almost bare of turf in some places, conditions which suited MAHMOUD, but inconvenienced many of the other runners. The race attracted the customary huge attendance despite the cold and dull conditions. This was run on Wednesday 27th May 1936 and the winner was bred by HH Aga Khan III and trained by Frank Butters at Newmarket. There were 22 runners from an initial entry of 287. The winner won by 3 lengths with 3/4 length between second and third. The winners time was 2 mins 33.8 secs. The winner won a first prize of £9,934 5s, the equivalent of £1,530,000 today.
