1892-06-01 Fred Allsopp SIR HUGO 3rd Earl of Bradford Epsom Derby The Weighing Room

Derby The Weighing Room Owners and Trainers check on their jockeys in this print from 1893 at the Epsom classic. This was run on Wednesday 1st June 1892 and the winner was bred by the 3rd Earl of Bedford and trained by Tom Wadlow at Stanton. There were 13 runners from an initial entry of 259, and the winner won by 3/4 length with a length between second and third. The winners time was 2 mins 44 secs and first prize was £6,960, the equivalent of £2,740,000 today.
1892 in Hongkong, Sir Paul Chaterwas elected Chairman of HKJC, and remained so for 34 years, until his death in 1926. David Sassoon owned the best ponies HERO and MAJESTIC in Shanghai while his family finally won the Epsom Derby 50 years later.
