1872-05-29 Charles Maidment CREMORNE Henry Savile Epsom Derby color print

The second of six horses to win both the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. This was run on Wednesday 29th May 1872 and the winner was bred by Mr Henry Saville and trained by William Gilbert at Newmarket. There were 23 runners from an initial entry of 191. The winner won by a head in 2 min 45.5 secs, with 3 lengths between second and third. The winner won a first prize of £4,850, the equivalent of £2,360,000 today. 1872, Chater first entered the races with two subscription griffins. All the races were confined to China, Manila and Japan ponies, except the Subscription Challenge Cup and the Mafoos’ race. Hongkong Club Cup, confined to horses.
