1834-05-29 Patrick Connolly PLENIPOTENTIARY Mr S Batson Epsom Derby oil painting

oil painting of PLENIPOTENTIARY with Mr Stanlake Batson of Horseheath, Cambridgeshire.. PLENIPOTENTIARY ran seven times and won six races. His only defeat, in the St Leger at Doncaster later that year, was widely believed to be the result of foul play. His Epsom Derby was run on Thursday 29th May 1834 and there were 22 runners from an initial entry of 123. The winner won by 2 lengths to claim a first prize of £3,625, the equivalent of £2,700,000 today. The winner was bred by Mr Stanlake Batson of Horseheath, Cambridgeshire and trained by Mr G Payne. In Hong Kong, 1848-02-07_2, the inaugural Plenipotentiary Cup was presented by Governor Davis. The trophy race became the Governors Cup untill 1997.
