Happy Valley New Year Races


New Year Races for New Hope raises, no matter your ethnic or culture origins, we share the same hope.


The race meeting held on the first day of the New Year, has always been Hong Kong‘s most popular horse racing event of all.






1968-01-01 heated up Happy Valley early in the morning. Over 5000 racegoers were refused for entry due to the Full House.


But still there were lots of fans stayed behind waiting for black-market tickets which raised to HK$30, even the regular price was HK$10 only.
They were hopeful to have a chance to get in after the lunch break.


Attendance in the Members’ Enclosure were double comparing to the normal race days. Notably, the Red Flag was hoisted earlier than expected by 11:30 A.M.


The Police Band were playing to add the festive atmosphere, especially .






Novice rider Ho Kwok Ying had not a winner after nine racedays since the 1967/68 season. But he got a trio victories and promoted to Black Label Official Jockey when he won the Race 10 on BLOSSOM.


The American Cup held on Race 6 was won by Johnny Cruz on CAPTAIN COURAGE owned by Kam Kwong Yee. A group photo for the presentation ceremony shown their happiness in the New Year Victory.


The Stewards’ Cup was held on Race 8, TC Cheng receiving the trophy from Mrs Fung Ping Fun after his winning on WINALOT. He was clear ahead from the Runner-up DALAGITA which gave a surprising odd.






All ten races offered fruitful dividends while the hot favorites results were mostly disappointed and their puncters’ loss should be huge, except CAPTAIN COURAGE.


Dividends on Daily Double and Quinella were over HK$800 for the first Leg and HK$340 for the Second Leg.






As the fixtures of the Lunar Chinese New Years Races became a regular fixture after the profressionalization since 1974, highest attendance has been the norm especially in recent years.
