International Races – Hong Kong Sprint



An Essential Event On The Itinerary Of The World’s Best Sprinters


Hong Kong Sprint is the newest among the four International races but being the most favorite among the local racing community.





The Hong Kong Sprint is a Group 1 flat horse race in Hong Kong which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 1,200 metres (about 6 furlongs) at Sha Tin, and it is scheduled to take place each year in December.

  • 1999, was the world’s richest sprint over 1000m.
  • 2000, became an International Group III race.
  • 2001, became an International Group II race.
  • 2002, became an International Group I race.
  • 2006, the race upped in distance to 1200m.
  • 2010, the total purse stood at HK$14m (US$1.8m).

    1999-12-12 FAIRY KING PRAWN,ridden by jockey Steven King won over CRYSTAL CHARM which also based in HK.


    2000-12-17 FALVELON won, trained in Queensland by Dan Bougoure,pulled off a significant betting plunge.


    2001-12-16 FALVELON defeating American speedster MORLUC by narrow margins with Damien Oliver in the saddle again.


    2002-12-15 ALL THRILLS TOO, ridden by Gerald Mosse,won over fellow HK runner FIREBOLT.


    2003-12-14 SILENT WITNESS‘ reign at the world’s leading turf sprinter by defeating NATIONAL CURRENCY of South africa.


    2004-12-12 SILENT WITNESS won in a canter burnt off by 4-1/4 lengths over 200m out with CAPE OF GOOD HOPE trailing in second for HK.


    2005-12-11 NATURAL BLITZ to defy odds of over 27/1.


    2006-12-10 ABSOLUTE CHAMPION won after the patience and treatment by trainer David Hall.


    2007-12-09 SACRED KINGDOM thrashed an excellent field by over two lengths ahead ABSOLUTE CHAMPION.


    2008-12-14 INSPIRATION led home an almighty shock Hong Kong quinella.


    2009-12-13 SACRED KINGDOM, upheld local dominance by regaining the title.


    2010-12-12 J J THE JET PLANE of South Africa, ridden by P Strydom had his epic win over ROCKET MAN.






    The event is now the final leg in the nine race Global Sprint Challenge series, preceded by The Age Classic.





    1999, Ricky Yiu the first Chinese trainer to score the International Group Race.


    2002, David Hayes landed his first and only success in an international race as a HK trainer by ALL THRILLS TOO.


    2003, SILENT WITNESS, starting at odds of 1.3 favourite set the record of betting.


    2004, SILENT WITNESS with the13th win in his career, shortly after the race, got Time Magazine listed him as one of the ‘People Who Mattered’ An introduction read: “Yes, he’s a horse. But don’t hold that against him….”


    2005, Derek Cruz snared the first Group I win of his career by NATURAL BLITZ .


    2005, the first five past the post were representatives of Hong Kong.


    2006, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION destroyed the field by over four lengths in track record time.


    2009, SACRED KINGDOM, absent in 2008, upheld local dominance by regaining the title.


    2010, J J THE JET PLANE broke the eighth straight season for the winner to be based at Sha Tin.


    Although it is the youngest of the four championships events, the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint is one of the richest races running a distance of 2000 meters globally.
