Of another Jardine annual fixture, Col. Dowbiggin recalls: “An amusing unofficial race was that held on the morning of 1st January after the usual all-night session at Jardines’ East Point Mess (the Gun having been duly fired with ceremony at midnight to welcome the New Year). Any young member of that firm who could ride at all had to perform in this race, and I have seen ‘well-lit’ riders hoisted on their ponies, only to promptly fall off on the other side. At one such race I watched, one of the riders dislocated his collarbone. It is remarkable that more were not injured.”
