The Traditional Classic Race of Hong Kong
The last Group I of the season, the valuable Standard Chartered Champions and Chater Cup is the final leg of the Triple Crown.
He had one of his famous horses named CHATER which won prominent prizes and races competing between Shanghai and Hong Kong. It may be the origin of “The Chater Cup“. Sir Paul is credited with guiding the Jockey Club through its early years which the Cup could be named after him.
This race has been the final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown since the series was first introduced in the 1991/92 season.
So the the Standard Chartered or Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup is a Hong Kong Thoroughbred horse race held annually in late May or early June at Sha Tin Racecourse. A Group One race that offers a purse of HK$8,000,000, it is run on turf over a distance of 2400 meters and is open to horses three years of age and older.
