CATALAN OPENING won Chrysler Stakes (Aus-G1) at his last start was sent off the third choice at a generous 5-1.

Racegoers for the Breeders’ Cup Mile the third place DECORATED HERO and the local galloper SPECIAL had a larger vision.

From the start, SPECIAL who had won his last three starts from off the pace, Basil Marcus had no choice but to let his runner lead.

SPECIAL covered the first 200m at a high speed in 13.9 seconds, then the following 400m recorded a fast time of 22.1 seconds.

CATALAN OPENING, ridden by Beadman, relaxed out back through all the early commotion.

As they straightened for the wire, the early heat took it’s toll on SPARTACUS and LASER STAR, who packed it in.

SPECIAL and WIZARD KING proceeded in good fashion for another 200m of the straight.

CATALAN OPENING led the field near the 100m mark and went on to score by 1¼ lengths.

RUSSIAN REVIVAL, raced wide for the most part but rallied well under jockey Michael Kinane at the 400m to claim second money.

Japan’s SHINKO KING was last at the head of the straight but took the short route along the rails to account for third, a further 2¼ lengths back.

CATALAN OPENING covered the 1400 metre trip in a time of 1.22.0 over a good-to-firm course.





Bart Cummings has won every major race in Australia but his only international triumph came with this galloper in the 1997 Hong Kong International Mile.
