1997-04-13 Queen Elizabeth II Cup:

The news was traveling fast and furious back to South Africa after their country’s representative LONDON NEWS triumphed with compatriot Douglas Whyte in the saddle.

They pulled off a narrow win in the HK$5 million Queen Elizabeth II Cup (over 2000 meters) at Sha Tin racecourse.

The race started out with PRIVILEGE (Anton Marcus) breaking alertly from the fifth stall and moving to the lead.

Following quickly in behind was LONDON NEWS, ANNUS MIRABILIS AND ORIENTAL EXPRESS (Basil Marcus).

Such order through the opening 600 meters.

There would be little change throughout the running.

The course rated good-to-firm definitely appeared to be favoring the speed.

Heading into the final turn, PRIVILEGE was still holding on to a length-and-a-half margin from LONDON NEWS.

Whyte was starting to make his move, as was ANNUS MIRABILIS.

PRIVILEGE was being urged and fighting toughly in a thrilling stretch duel.

50 meters from the winning post , LONDON NEWS finally made it to the front and held on for a half-length victory.

A determined effort by countryman Douglas Whyte on board LONDON NEWS provided South Africa with their first international success in 39 years.
