OUR MEMORIES
DUNBAR

Dunbar (Scots [dʌnˈbaɾ]) is a town in East Lothian on the southeast coast of Scotland, approximately 28 miles (45 km) east of Edinburgh and 28 miles (45 km) from the English Border at Berwick-upon-Tweed.

ELITE SOCIALIST

Mr & Mrs Dunbar were successful entrepreneur, popular socialists, and famous race horse owners in Hong Kong before World War II.

An American horse ran in Hong Kong a hundred years ago, but there have not been many renowned American owners in that era.

RENOWNED OWNER

1920, an American couple, Mr & Mrs Lambert & Elsie Dunbar, with characteristic efficiency made racing history.

Mr Dunbar, a flour merchant from the American North-west, came here about to join his father in the firm Flour Broker, Dunbar Bros. Co.

For high and even quality of ponies, the Dunbar stable was unique.

Numerically, theirs were never the longest strings; but they were certainly select, with a high proportion of perpetual winners.

1928, there were nine Dunbar ponies, of which six won races.

1930’s, Mrs Dunbar’s stable was the strongest, with six good ponies.

1932, Mr Dunbar entered ten, and Mrs Dunbar six.

His champions were the incomparable LIBERTY BAY, ELLIOTT BAY, CYCLAMEN BAY, OAK BAY, FORTUNE BAY, CONFUSION BAY and GLENEAGLES.

Then when Mr Chan Tin-sion’s STAG stable was dispersed, Dunbar acquired the wonderful WOODLAND STAG.

Mrs Dunbar’s great ponies were principally the mighty SITTING BULL and the everlasting DIANA BAY.
