HIGHLIGHTS

The Champions & Chater Cup was first run in 1870 as the “Champion Stakes”. Since then it has also been known as the “Chater Cup” in memory of Sir Paul Chater.

He had one of his famous horses named CHATER which won prominent prizes and races competing between Shanghai and Hong Kong. It may be the origin of “The Chater Cup“. Sir Paul is credited with guiding the Jockey Club through its early years which the Cup could be named after him.

1955 onwards, Chater Cup renamed Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup.

This race has been the final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown since the series was first introduced in the 1991/92 season.

2009/10 season, HKJC began to accept the Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited title sponsor, renamed Standard Chartered Champions and Chater Cup.

So the the Standard Chartered or Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup is a Hong Kong Thoroughbred horse race held annually in late May or early June at Sha Tin Racecourse. A Group One race that offers a purse of HK$8,000,000, it is run on turf over a distance of 2400 meters and is open to horses three years of age and older.
